UFrOcktober take 2

warning: if poor photography offends you, please look away now. This post contains several scenes of offensively poor photography.

If I am ever asked what I would like for a birthday gift my answer is obviously “Oh you needn’t bother” SWIFTLY followed by “but if you insist – fabric, please…” and my favourite thing is to leave the choice up to the gift-giver – I just love to see what other people think would suit me.

So back in the days when I had decided that I wanted to sew, but had not really got into it a few of my friends got together for my birthday and bought me 5 patterns, 3 metres each of 3 lovely fabrics and some ribbons for good measure. I was a very happy girl that day.

One of the patterns, Simplicity 2245 (the Lisette Portfolio tunic, which I think is now OOP), I immediately made up in a loose weave, kind of  linen-y, dun-coloured fabric I had sitting around.

Now you make up a cute but undeniably sack-like pattern in a cheap and undeniably sack-like fabric and what are you going to get? That said, I actually kind of like this and do wear it sometimes. It suits me better than it suits my dress form. I can sling it on over jeans, or wear it with tights and boots, add in a scarf and you’ve got yourself and outfit.

In fact I liked the pattern so much I immediately went on to make the short version in one of the fabrics from the same gift bundle:

I particularly like the buttons on the neck of this one – they came from my Grandma’s stash:

And I was always very pleased with my finish inside:

I invented that style of seam finish, you know? Of course I was not the first person to invent it, but I don’t think I’d read about it anywhere at that point.

But what has all this got to do with UFOs or frocks or, indeed, October? Very little, really; I’m just having a slow day at work.

Ah no – the patterns. As part of the same gift I also received Cynthia Rowland’s Simplicity 2215, which I started to make in one of the other fabrics (a V&A print, I think, but I no longer have any of the selvedge to check). I made up the bodice – fully lined – tried it on and it looked awful on me, so a UFO was born.

Some time later I came back to it, re-made the bodice so it was a better fit and at that point decided that instead of the button bodice with buttonless skirt of the pattern I wanted a button through pinafore, so I cut up the skirt pieces, realised that I would need to line the skirt (as the lining for the bodice is also the facing – are you with me?), found spare lining fabric and then could not decide what order to sew it all back together. So a UFO it remained. Until now:

Now, the eagle-eyed among you will have spotted that it is not I modelling this dress. Unfortunately in the time since re-fitting the bodice I have put on a few belly pounds and it is not currently particularly flattering.

Which is a real shame as I really like it. But tummies come and tummies go – it’ll fit me again one day.

And what of the other patterns I received that fine day 3 years ago? Vogue 1084 is currently cut out in a heavy grey suiting fabric, and has been for a couple of years now. UFO. Simplicity 2219 is currently cut out in a rather cheap, stretchy, highly patterned knit and has been for about 3 years now. The pattern does call for knits, but I am not sure my choice was a wise one. UFO – and may well remain so.

So there we have it. Thanks to Andrea, Sarah, Katy and Marion for the fabric and patterns.

and I thought I was the only one with UFO’s from years and years ago lurking in my sewing closet (yes, I have a whole closet dedicated to my sewing obsessions….)

I recently found UFO’s that I had started for my girls! One was for a 5 year old… and well, my youngest is 16. Unless I have granddaughters I guess those UFO’s will remain that way! I love the pinafore you created out of yours! And your seam finishing is marvelous! So neat inside! ~Laurie

Most of my UFOs are only 2 – 3 years old, but there are a few of them. I guess that letting out the seams and turning down the hem isn’t quite going to do the trick with yours…

  3. Good job for cracking on and getting it finished. I think it looks great. Love the buttons down the front. I don’t have any UFOs I’ve not been sewing long enough to get any. But, I’ve inherited some that are as old as I am! My Nan has sadly passed away, and as no one else in the family was interested I hovered up all her sewing stuff. There were a lot of UFOs in amongst her stash!

What a lovely way to be able to remember your Nan. Do you think you will finish any of her UFOs? I wasn’t into sewing when my grandmother died, but must have known that I would get back into it one day, as I kept some of her stash. I’ll still find things with the price tickets on from shops which closed 30 years ago!

      • Not sure what to do with them- she was a size 18 and I’m a 8! Also lots of shoulder padded freaks amongst the UFOs. But I will do something with them. Watch this space… or at least my new blog!

I love, love, love the purple shirtdress! Maybe put in a little extra effort to make it fit again (but not to much effort, girls still need to have fun!)?

  5. My Sewing Suite says:

I love the dress! I have so many UFO’s and things that un fitting items. It is good to know we are not alone.

    • rachsews says:

Thank you – once i have worked my way through the UFO pile (and there is a way to go there, yet) I should really move onto badly finished and poorly fitting things!

  6. Eva says:

The simplicity 2219 dress is really lovely, so as the simplicity 2245 blouse. I have a couple of UFOs too: a plaid cape and a red dress for christmas. Probably I will finish them some day!

    • rachsews says:

Thanks, Eva. I’ve found there is something quite cathartic about tackling UFOs… but there will always be another Christmas next year, if you don’t get it done this year!

  7. Boony says:

Wow, I love that dress! 🙂

  8. nishi says:

Ha ha! You are so good going back and finishing things! I have the ultimate excuse for not finishing – it’s too hot here to wear most of my UFO’s! Hurray! I love the Simplicity pattern – such cute details! And the seam finish is perfect! Clever you! Neat dress too – V&A fabric sounds very fancy (and very tempting – perhaps it’s a good thing I live on the other side of the world…!)!

    • rachsews says:

It feels good to have got a couple of them out of the way (and I have a couple more nearly finished now). I am impressed that you have not yet created any Singapore UFOs… !

  9. hofficoffi says:

I love the phrase ‘tummies come and tummies go’… I am hoping it is true! I love the button down detail of the dress.

  10. Zoe says:

Good job on finishing up the UFOs, I really like the Cynthia Rowley dress! I really should finish some of mine…I’ll do that eventually. The crazy patterned knit dress sounds really cool, I’m interested to see it.

    • rachsews says:

Thanks Zoe. The patterned knit dress is not so much cool as just wrong (actually, I haven’t yet unearthed it; I know I have not thrown it out, but I have clearly buried it deep! – I will try to find it before the end of UFrOcktober and see if it can be salvaged)

  13. well I am THE most impressed with your finishing efforts. well done !
I counted ELEVEN buttons on the shirt dress , ( my favourite ) which can only mean the same number of buttonholes , always a freakout for me , and they all look so FLAT and TRIM !
now remember those two little words … incentive for wearing this lovely, lovely dress. : )
I guess it won’t be till spring hits your shores , so in the meanwhile enjoy your yummies ….please : )
